This glossary includes acronyms and terms which may be encountered in the Bluetooth technology, and serves as a quick look-up guide.

UA Channel User Asynchronous data channel. One of the 5 logical channels defined for the bluetooth system. The UA channel carries L2CAP transparent asynchronous user data. It is normally carried in the ACL link.

UAP Upper Address Portion. A 8-bit section of the BD_ADDR. See also LAP & NAP.

UART Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter. A device which converts parallel data into serial data for transmission, or it converts serial data into parallel data for receiving data.

UC User Control.

UDP User Datagram Protocol: a packet based, unreliable, connectionless transport protocol which works over Internet Protocol (IP).

UDP/IP User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol: an unreliable data transport protocol.

UI Unnumbered Information: an optional GSM07.10 frame type used to send data on emulated serial links.

UI User Interface: the application which a user interacts with. Also called MMI, or Man Machine Interface.

UI Channel User Isochronous data channel. One of the 5 logical channels defined for the bluetooth system. The UI channel carries L2CAP transparent isochronous user data. It is normally carried in the ACL link. It is supported by timing start packets at higher levels.

UIAC Unlimited Inquiry Access Code: another name for GIAC.

UIH Unnumbered Information with Header error check; an RFCOMM data frame.

UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunications System.

Unit Key A key built into a unit which is used as part of the process of producing the link key used to encrypt data on a Bluetooth baseband link.

URL Uniform Resource Locator: defined by RFC1738, this is a standard way of writing addresses on the Internet; for example, http://www.btdesigner.com is a URL.

US Channel User Synchronous data channel. One of the 5 logical channels defined for the bluetooth system. The UI channel carries transparent synchronous user data. It is carried in the SCO link only.

USB Universal Serial Bus: a high speed connection standard widely used to connected devices to PCs.
User-Friendly Name A test device name which can easily be read by a human.

UUID Universal Unique Identifier. Used in the SDP layer.

VSWR Voltage Standing Wave Ration: a measure of relative radio signal strengths.

W

W3C World Wide Web Consortium.

WAE Wireless Application Environment: the application layer of the WAP specification.

WAN Wide Area Network.

WAP Wireless Application Protocol: a communications protocol which aims to give mobile devices access to the Internet and other advanced data services.

WBFH WideBand Frequency Hopping: same as FHSS, but wider channels allow more data to be carried in each hopping channel using multiple carriers.

WLAN Wireless Local Area Network.

WLL Wireless Local Loop.

WDP Wireless Datagram Protocol.

WML Wireless Markup Language.

WSP Wireless Session Protocol: the session layer of the WAP specification.

WTA Wireless Telephony Application: a telephony application that is part of the WAP specification.

WTLS Wireless Transport Layer Security: the part of the WAP specification supporting security links.

WTP Wireless Transaction Protocol: part of the WAP specification providing reliable links over lower, unreliable transport layers.

WUG Wireless User Group.

WWW World Wide Web.

X

X Excluded: used to identify prohibited features when specifying which Bluetooth features a profile should support.

XOR Exclusive OR.
